Welcome to Week 41 – O Week: Pearls' Coastal Capers!

Featuring: Opal, Old, Orange, Outdoor

OPAL
A pretty opal pink shrub in bloom outside of one of my favorite stores this past June.

OLD FISHERMAN'S LANDING
You've heard of “having one's ducks in a row”. How about swans in a row?! Photo taken last Saturday at Old Fisherman's Landing on Kelly's Pond.

ORANGE
An unremarkable photo, I know. Just a bunch of pumpkins piled up outside of a store. But the backstory is what draws me into this photo. This is the neighborhood “mom 'n pop” grocery store, located (surprisingly) right across the street from a big chain grocery store where I used to do all of my grocery shopping. Then came the pandemic and in an effort to stay out of big, crowded places I switched to this neighborhood store. Now when I go into this little store I am reminded of what a journey it has been to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, and how grateful I am that the positivity rate is falling in my area and people seem to be returning to many of their pre-pandemic activities.

OUTDOOR DINING
These days, “outdoor dining” conjures up images of vinyl tents on city streets, filled with patrons wearing coats and only briefly un-masking to chow down. Not my kind of outdoor dining. This photo shows the kind I like! In fact on opening day this spring I'll be there ordering my soft serve to enjoy at one of the tables or to carry across the parking lot to the benches overlooking the beach.

Thanks for joining me for Pearls' Coastal Capers - “O week”!

Thanks! Yes, Kelly's Pond is part of a big estuary system and from what I've read the area is home to bluefish, perch, bass, clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, and more!

THE SEASCAPE IS QUITE STRIKING. WE HAVE A FEW SWANS HERE AND SOMEHOW OR OTHER THREE OF THEM GOT INTO THE MED A FEW MONTHS AGO. THEY DIDN'T SEEM BOTHERED BY THE SALT WATER AT ALL BUT WE WALKERS WERE VERY SURPRISED TO SEE THEM.

Beautiful "O" photos, Pearls. The first and second photos are my favourite. I love flowers and swans. Oudoor dining is lovely on a nice bright mild day, not for me in winter.

Swans must be able to adapt pretty easily to different types of water. Kelly's Pond is a mixture of fresh and salt water and this group of swans seemed very happy there! It was fun to watch them.

Thanks, Maudie! I know what you mean about outdoor dining in cold weather. I'd rather just eat at home and wait for warmer temperatures to visit restaurants that have outdoor dining.

Thanks! Yes, Old Fisherman's Landing was beautiful that morning. The photo really doesn't do it justice though .... I don't have a zoom lens and couldn't get close enough to the swans. And there was a pretty sunrise glow that morning too, but the swans just wouldn't swim in that direction no matter how much I pleaded with them. lol

Yes, I love it here for three seasons out of the year! Winter is not so great but at least it's usually mild compared to my former home in NH.

Thanks ... I love the landings around here. Even during high season they're typically quiet. I like quiet.

Thank you! Off season it's a little challenging to find the beauty of the Cape so I'm looking forward to springtime photography!

An enjoyable walk-about with you, as usual. I like those pink flowers, they remind me of the wild rambling rose that grows around here.... and of SPRING!!! I remind myself that Spring is coming, as I sit here and listen to the cold winds blow.
Oh, I chuckled at your comment about the winter in NH.... that was where Joe was living and after one nasty snow that almost caved in his carport, he asked his sister here in Illinois how much snow we get in a winter. It's far less than he got in NH, so it was a draw for him to move here, and also to be near his sister.

I totally agree about NH winters. They're pretty severe. The one winter I spent in Illinois was, just as you said, not too snowy but wow was it ever cold!! I had temporarily moved from Massachusetts to Lake Forest for my first year of college, and I don't know what my mother and I must have been thinking when we packed my bags but somehow I arrived on campus with no warm coat .. just a leather jacket. My discomfort must have been obvious because one day I arrived at my part-time job to find a gift of a coat waiting for me at my desk!
