Personally, I like it both ways.
But the history, especially that is it a personally known tragedy, would be reason enough for me to hang on to it also. I love items that have a meaning.
I have a painting of which I am not particularly fond, but I bought it on Joe and my first real date and therefore the sentimental value is far greater than the actual painting.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

WHY RED? KIND OF LOUD IN MY HUMBLE OPINION UNLESS SOME OF YOUR OTHER STUFF IS RED TOO. JUST SAYING. SAD STORY.

I don't like the looks of brown wood furniture or brown wood anywhere in the house for that matter except possibly on the floor. So to me it looks so much better painted. Maybe white or clear crystal type handles would look cute on it. So sorry about those two young boys. So sad.

I understand about keeping pieces with sentimental value. As I have moved and downsized, the keepers are the character pieces, the ones with heart. The hutch looks great in that colour. I have a big hutch that I want to re-finish too....It's had a paint-chart taped to it foe a couple of years now because I cannot decide on a colour.....I admire your decisiveness......

I had a hard time getting back up from laying on my side to view these

I like both finishes but red would not work in our house so, the wood would work best.

But you put brush to wood.....that's further than I've gotten....( is there such a word?.....gotten.....it looks peculiar, but spell-check approves, LOL.....Anyways.....that red colour. It was a very common colour in days of yore, because it was made from red ochre, a naturally occurring and easily obtainable earth pigment. The paint was made from linseed oil and ground ochre. That is the source of the traditional red barn...to protect the wood from the elements. My youngest sister, who has lived in Norway most of her life, does traditional decorative painting and has given me recipes for traditional colours, that red being one of them........Have you noticed how the colour of a large item in a room causes the eye to pick up other items of the same colour?.....I find that fascinating.........I have a lovely little covered dish made of turned wood and painted that red ochre and decorated with Rosemaling.......

That is a striking piece in red, and it sure has keen memories attached to it.

There's a way to split the difference, too, as there are transparent wood stains in colors of the rainbow.

My latest discovery is lime-wash finish paint.
