Got a strange call this evening

It was an acquaintence of mine, asking me if I was watching the Olympics. And when I said I didn't have it on at that moment, he let out a sigh of relief.
He explained that he figured it was entirely un-american to be watching the Olympics in China. He said they have a terrible government with a repressive regime. He said there were people living in mud huts and living no differently than they might have a thousand years ago.
When I said that the Olympics was not about the government of a particular country, but about the purity of sport.
I told him even George had gone to the Olympics, and he didn't beleive me. The idea that the President would be there, just didn't make any sense to him.
He figures that any country that does not live the way we do, here in the US, just must be evil.
I told him I had turned on the Olympics while we were talking and had watched Michael Phelps win another gold medal.
I also told him I was glad I lived in this country because I was darned sure I never wanted to live in the country he thought he lived in.
He was a bit indignant when he jammed the phone in my ear.

God bless each and every one of you.

unconventional:

I agree with you. I hear over and over again how bad other countries are and how barbaric their governments are. There are many in the United States that have never been out of the US and have no idea how other countries live. The only listen to the media. We may not agree with things that happen in other countries but we need to focus on our own home land. We need to clean our own house before worrying about our neighbors.

GREAT BLOG!!!

My neighbor this morning was saying nearly the same thing, though not about the Olympics. She was angry the Chinese government had spent so much money on the Olympics and not on the people in the earthquake.

I reminded her the money for the Olympics had been spent long before the earthquake had happened, and that the government had spared no expense in going in and trying to rescue people.

And she said we would have never let that happen in the US. I suggested that her next trip abroad be to China. To see the country first hand and meet the people. And stop trying to make China believe like we do.

Let them be China. I would give anything to go there. Literally all that I have. Granted, that is not a heck of a lot.

Hi unconventionalme,
Some are xenophobic and some are plain ignorant. Some think that in my country, we live in trees. As I write, Michael Phelps has won 5 golds and become the greatest Olympian ever.
I am luckier than you in that I have visited China twice after my retirement. I have not been to America but I have certainly seen a lot of it on TV, in films and online but it's not the same. Maybe, some day.
