When They Won't Eat Cake My youngest had yesterday's dinner at her house. I asked what I could contribute. She requested a vegetable casserole I have been making for years. She and her sister fight over who gets the leftovers for lunch the next day. My youngest grand selected her favorite restaurant based on their salad. Strange . OK, vegies covered but being a typical grandma a holiday dinner isn't complete without something sweet. Sounds easy but neither of my daughters like cake and only like a couple kinds of pie. Same with 2 of the grands. Time to get creative. A fruit bunny pictured below. it was a huge success. Now I am thinking of other things I can carve for seasonally appropriate fruit or vegetable serving dishes. With all of today's fuss about healthy eating many wonder what I did to get them interested in healthy food. Surprisingly nothing really. I always included fruit and vegetables, always fresh and often home grown, in our daily meal menus. However I restricted nothing. They had baked goods, sugary cereals, candy, chips etc. but in their place as treats, not instead of meal type food. Spiritwoman ^i^ |

We usually hava big bowl of fruit at most of our family get togethers. Most of them are pot luck BBQ's so far less formal but we try to be a bit more normal on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. We actually eat inside like civilized folks! Spiritwoman ^i^

I remember those days. Somehow it all tastes so good right out of the garden, dirt and all. I wonder if it didn't taste better then because where I grew up had full seasons. Things sprouted, grew, boomed and the time of fresh ripe produce was limited. I would wait all year for my favorite, blueberries. They would all ripen within a 4 - 6 week time frame then would be gone until the next year. Spiritwoman ^i^
