Mountains

I have lived with mountains all of my life other than the few years I spent in Toronto and Miami. They make me feel safe and protected. Maybe it's genetic. My family comes from the Italian Alps.

The mountain in this picture is my current "sentinel". "She" It is the first thing I look for whether I am returning whether via the state highway or the mountain pass. When I see "her" I feel an immediate sense of peace and safety, like she will swallow me up and hide me from the crazy outside world.

Years ago stationed in San Berdoo people who arrived had no idea until the skies cleared. Funny. Fliers knew, right turn after takeoff

I miss seeing the mountains in California and the west.

A few years ago Alfie and I had gone to Dahlonega, GA. A man was talking about old mountains and new mountains. I was at a loss at what he was saying so asked the difference.

He explained the eastern mountains are old mountains, soft green covered mountains. New mountains out west are rugged, rocky and not much tree life.

One day I hope Alfie and I can make it to the west so he can see what the country is like out there.

Actually these are just the smaller costal range of mountains so likely Novella's are the same. There are places on the coast where they rise directly out od the ocean. The ones here were carved out by the river I was standing next to when I took this picture.

You are right about feeling vulnerable. Happens when I am in any of the plains areas.

I remember my very first year here and how it was amazed at how clearly those mountains were visible in the winter compared to how hazy they were during the summer smoggy season

I'll bet yours has more vegetation on it like the ones I grew up with on the east coast.

I remember learning about the " old" and "new" mountains in school. I grew up with the gentler ones in western MA and it did take some adjustment to the vegetation absent sharper ones here.

Like you I have had a love of mountains since the first time I saw them. Growing up on the plains of Kansas the first sighting at my age of nine years created a lasting impression. Ultimately I was able to live for four years in the centet of Summit County ski resorts.

I have met some who feel confined by mountains. For myself, I feel sheltered.
I too feel sheltered, even more so with the eastern mountains that have a lot of vegetation.
