Suddenly in a Differnt Position

When I last blogged about presidential visits not helping in disasters from an observer’s view point I had no idea how quickly it could become personal. Today I am seeing it from a victim’s view point. One of the fires is near our lake property and just jumped the lake. Our area has been evacuated and our near neighbors who have a well-developed property just lost theirs. Since our area is so inaccessible the public helpers can’t get in to protect the buildings. Well, they could but they need to focus their resources where they will do the most good) I’m trying to follow the progress on the CalFire maps but they are not up to the minute. Hopefully they will show something by tomorrow.

Like all of the wild fire victims we won’t know our fate for a while but more likely than not we will lose our buildings and everything in them – boats, jet skis, 2 RV trailers, jeep, huge generator, water tank, and worst of all our heavy equipment, the bull dozer and road grader. I’m not sure exactly what else we have up stored there at the moment but I am sure the list will grow.

My oldest and I had the same thought. Good thing the roads are closed because our reaction, illogical as it is, is to go there and defend. Realistically there is nothing we could do and would only create problems and distract the firefighters from working on the fire.

Fortunately no one was on the property - last visit 2 weeks ago - and no one is losing anything essential to daily life but there are lots of things it took a lifetime to accumulate and the property is an investment for our and grand ’s future. Financially the property value will now be next to nothing and may take another generation to come back. Of course there is always the possibility our stuff will be spared as you never know about the wild fires.

So how do I feel about a presidential visit now? I am even more adamant about saying HELL NO. Now I can speak as a victim saying that the last thing we want / need is ANY politician. They can best help by doing what needs to be done authority wise to send resources that can help. After all I believe that that is their job / role. If one did show up I would probably get arrested for throwing chard remains at them in anger for using people’s loss for a publicity and photo opp.

Oh No Spirit- I'm So Saddened About This - Prayers Going Your Way Today- I was thinking about you a couple days ago wondering if it was going to affect you or
Your property- I agree- Politics Be Damned When People Are Really Hurting right now!!
Thank you. Prayers (or their equivalent) and favorable winds are all that will save us. I have been deep in my positive out come visualizations, a non verbal non deity specific version of prayer.

Been thinking about our political leaders more. Their role is as executives so they should be doing just that, solving problems and authorizing solutions from behind the scene. I think that is why I find their visiting disaster areas offensive - they could help so much more by doing their jobs.

I've been watching those California fires on the national news, and My God! It is like a vision of hell on Earth. I wish you all the best with this catastrophe, Spirit, and hope you are one of the lucky ones. Sending lots of luck your way.

Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way Spirit. From what I have read, they have a few of the fires contained, some, not looking too good, but maybe now that some of the fires have been stopped, they can focus on containing those near your property.

Stay safe!!

Hope all goes well for you Spirit and hopefully you will not lose much. The forest fire in Ft. McMurray, Alberta was one of the worst in Canada. You can never replace stuff you have accumulated over a life time.

I lived near San Diego for several years. There was a huge fire just east of us. Later after all was done, we heard at one point our town was completely surrounded by fires.

We watched a house in the hills near us have the fire creeping closer and closer. We had driven to where we could see a bit more and saw a fire truck up there. After it was over the house still stood! Turned out, their house was completely surrounded by gravel out quite a distance so that helped.

Lots of people out there and down in a canyon near us had fire breaks all around their houses.

Another time I had driven up to Orange, Calif. to visit my friend. There had been fires around parts of the town, up in the hills. We would see a house or 2, then totally gone, then across the street a house had burned completely and another still stood. Eerie!

It is beautiful in those hills but can be so vulnerable to fires.

Here's hoping all will be well. I too think of you on hearing the news reports, hoping that you are safe/not too affected; such devastating losses for many.

You are right - it is like a vision of hell and even if not directly in the fire the smoke and ash makes things look like a nuclear winter.

Most of the focus has been on one of the other areas of this fire becasue it threatens an irreplaceable national landmark. latest word is that our side is still our of control and they are doing their best to protect structures but so far over 40 have been lost and 7 damaged. No way of knowing if ours is one until the fire is under control and someone can get in and take a look.

They certainly can and do. As I was telling my sister earlier no matter what we invest in, be it 401K's or property it can all be gone in the blink of an eye

You are correct. No matter what any politician does these days the press will put some sort of negative spin to it. All of them are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

As I tee shirt I used to have said "California's 4 seasons: Fire, Flood, Earthquake and Riot". It is the price we pay to live here and more so when we choose to live in the more "natural" areas. There are flood prone areas where you can't get flood insurance, fire prone areas where you can't get fire insurance and hard to get any sort of reasonable earthquake insurance anywhere. That should tell us something.

I lived near a flood plain in New Brunswick in the 70's.
One year the flooding was more than normal, and we ended up with a couple of inches of water in the basement.

Since then I have always lived high above rivers and lakes.

Not that is a guarantee since heavy rainfall can result in the same thing, but
it removes one of the risks.

One of the problems in Fort McMurray was that the city did not put fire damage measures into effect. The provincial government has plans on how to minimize damage by putting in fire breaks. If your house is right next to a lovely forest it certainly increases the odds of getting burned out.

This was apparent in Fort McMurray where houses on one side of the street were burned down to the foundation, but the ones on the other side were untouched.

Some manage to stay ahead of the flames but many don't. I read a comment on the local paper for that area about the roads being littered with bodies of deer (there are lots of them in that area) and other animals. We have (or maybe had) mountain lions, wild boar, turkey and quail flocks, eagles and all sorts of wonderful things out there. I am sure their population will rebuild as it always does but it is so sad to see the loss.
