A Political Question

Last night one of the major news items was the frenzy of rallies by both presdential candidates. My first thought was SNL’s “Trump” character’s answer “by taking a handful of pills that would be enough for 3 race horses”. Nah - is that it is probably natural adrenaline. Even in my dotage I still can’t sleep for 3 days if I am charged up over something far less exciting and important.

My question is not how but rather why. A couple of my thoughts. First of all, does anyone go to a large political rally these days to hear the candidate talk about the issues? This should be the reason but, come on, that info has been hard to sniff out even by sorting through pages and pages of each side’s propaganda. So why do they go? Maybe for the same reasons we went to high school prep rallies – they are fun and exciting and we want to show support. Maybe to see the candidate in person? In the 60’s I went to a Kennedy rally for this reason but I out grew that along with going for the excitement. Hilary’s last had so much entertainment maybe for a free concert. I could go on speculating for several pages. If I were a grad student in any of the behavioral sciences this would make an excellent study for a thesis.

All that aside my main question is does any of this frenzy really recruit voters on election eve, especially after the long, noisy, contentious campaigns we have seen this election cycle? How could someone come this far and not have reached a decision whether it be based on personal emotional hot buttons as this one seems to have been, true belief in a party platform which this round has completely destroyed, or, as it should be, careful analysis of the real facts which, thanks to the way our news and information sharing works these days takes more time and objectivity than anyone has or cares to spend? Even as a trained professional in getting to the nugget of reality wrapped in the layers and layers of life’s crap, I found it nearly impossible. A person would have to be an emotionless android programmed for logic and living in seclusion for the past year. Where is Mr. Spock when we need him?

I think part of the reason is to be able to say, "I saw so and so in person." It is a good story to pass down to grandies. Mine all know that I saw Abraham Lincoln speak in person at the Lincoln-Douglas debates.
Of course, I also think that the star attractions that hiLIARy brought to give concerts for her was the draw for many too. I mean, what fan could resist a free concert?

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I know for a fact Mrs. Joe saw Abraham Lincoln, 'cause I was sitting by her and we ARE both from Illinois!

As our only woman prime minister once said "an election campaign is no time to be discussing substantive issues".
