Time Out

I have not been posting here lately but decided to make an exception today. The following is a post I wrote for my personal website. I decided to share it here as well.
although the mainstream here promotes anything other than peace and harmony I know there are a few who still cherish peace, hope and encouragement.

Celebrating Solstice

Solstice is one of the oldest social / religious traditions. I find it absolutely amazing that even in ancient times someone was able to pinpoint when the earth’s tilt changed and the seasons shifted. Add to this that here in the northern hemisphere where most of the traditions originated the coldest, most challenging part of the year follows Winter Solstice and the hottest part of the year follows Summer Solstice. There are scientific reasons for this having to do with the length of time it takes the atmosphere to warm up and cool off but I won’t go into them here. In all cases and traditions the essential meaning of Solstice is that the sun returns. We see the same theme in the predominant religions of western culture. Pagans of all sorts celebrate solstice and yule. Christians celebrate Christmas. Jews celebrate Hanukkah. The secular world celebrates New Year’s Eve. All focus on light with various metaphors. We pagans are a bit more simple and direct by acknowledging the seasonal shift directly. Jews celebrate a tradition of one day’s worth of oil lasting for 8 days. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, who they see as the light of the world. The secular world celebrates New Year’s Eve with all sorts of lights and noise. It’s all about light.

But what does light really mean? Picture it in your mind. What emotions does it inspire? Hope, relief, encouragement, promise of better times to come, a restart, a new beginning. This year we need these more than ever.

Earlier I read an article suggesting that we take a “time out” at Solstice this year to rest and recoup. This thought appeals to me and something hard to find these days. I do not like large groups and people around me constantly like I have been dealing with this year. For society as a whole it has been one Hell of a ride this year and for me personally it has been one of the most demanding and challenging ones in a long time. I am exhausted and burned out. I cannot think of anything more appealing than closing the world out for a time, however brief, to sit in comfort, cup of hot chocolate made from scratch with real cream in hand with no light other than that of my multicultural holiday décor, and allow myself to feel hope and encouragement visualizing a sunnier time ahead.

I think we all need to rest and recoup our energies at different seasons of the year, and this is a very timely blog reminding us of that. Thanks for posting, Spirit.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I can relate with the exhaustion that comes from being around large groups of people. I spent too many years delivering presentations to groups of people and now that I'm retired I definitely prefer my time alone to discover, reflect, plan and pursue my interests at a pace that is all mine. I occasionally find periods of boredom and then missing work but to be honest those emotions don't last long. At least at this point in my life I'm way happier with time alone to just take it all in. It's a terrific time to recoup, I wish you well this Christmas season of peace and quiet rebirth.
Quiet and solitude may be the only way to find peace these days. Merry Christmas to you as well.

    Alfie...
We do and some how this time of year is often the most hectic and for some sad and painful. One thing about being as busy as I have been this past year is that the holiday extras are a piece of cake. Even took time out today to complete one of the last items on my 2016 list - replacing my 30 year old work van. Negotiations completed today and almost new one on it's way. Hope it will last as long as my old one has.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I think the charger is simply slowing down and being quiet long enough to look and listen. The energy, regardless of how we describe it is always there waiting for us.
