A Sad Visit A SAD VISIT The little old lady sat silently in the chair Her dull eyes now fixed in a vacant stare Whatever happened to turn out the light That once did shine, so happy and bright. I looked around and felt so bereft and sad Does the end of life have to be this bad I wept to see their lost and lonely despair Knowing no longer did they seem to care. These folks are sitting just waiting to die Nothing more to see in their mind’s eye A few soft tears fall like the gentle rain And someone brings a pill to ease the pain. I try hard to smile and gently touch a hand But they seem to say they don’t understand. The best medicine of all is a laugh and a song Then maybe their days will not seem so long. |

Sometimes I wonder at the great stories these old people have to tell, but nobody will find time to listen, everyone is so busy. They were young once, had great interesting lives, and now its all buried. I dont like Nursing Homes but when I went to visit my mother when she was there, Im afraid most of her companions had Alzheimers. One woman, who used to be a flower seller in Dublin, used to sing hymns, with a few expletives thrown in for good measure! Quite entertaining but terribly terribly sad. They are only waiting. A lot of them died before my Mother.

amy...the upside is there are angels out there...people that can bring that smile back...if only for a moment, it gives some elderly folks a reason to wait for the next ...nice poem...did you write it? Any Fool Can Criticize and Complain...and Most Do...

so timely for me. I will be traveling to MA Tues. for a visit my 91 year old mother. She is not in a home as my sister and sister's friend care for her at home but her mental function declines days. She does recognize me but that is about the limit of her capacity. so hard and so sad but I will continue to visit hen I can as long as she knows who I am. Spiritwoman ^i^
