How to dodge the draft

CBC Radio had an interview with a Canadian who joined the Marine Corps during the late unpleasantness in Vietnam.

What's interesting about his case is how he did it.

He was only 17, so couldn't join the Canadian military without his parents' permission.

He was across the border in Oroville one day looking at a US recruiting poster when he was approached by a guy who asked him if he wanted to sign up.

He responded that he couldn't because he was a Canadian.

The man said he could help.

Apprarently there was a black market in ids at the time. Guys who didn't want to be drafted sold their ids to a middleman, who sold them to guys who wanted to join.

So he paid the man 50 bucks, joined the Marines, and got shipped to SE Asia.

He and his PTSD came back to Canada after his tour where he joined the Canadian navy.

He now lives on Vancouver Island.

They are forgotten just like the guys who served on the Republican side in Spain, the white side in Rhodesia, the Serb and Croat sides in Yugoslavia.

That's what happens when you sign up for other people's wars.

I can only imagine how the CBC spewed the anti-American/pro-Canadian sentiments with a gem like this.

The Canadian government raked in millions during the Vietnam conflict - the same government that doles out the money to keep the CBC afloat.

Regardless of how a Canadian got into Vietnam, they are still regarded today as the "forgotten soldiers."
