Narciccus and Echo..........SFF style

.....Most are familiar with the story as Echo was the best beloved of all the nymphs of the wood. She was most favored by Aphrodite goddess of love. Echo refused to enter in to gossip which destroys love and Aphrodite told Echo that she would give her a love wish whenever she wanted one. Her demise was when she deceived Hera wife of Zeus by preventing Hera from discovering one of Zeus's many love liaisons. When Hera discovered what happened she put a spell on Echo to only repeat what was said to her.....Enter Narcissus a man quite taken with himself and who believed that he was above everyone. He could not find love that could match him. He decided to leave the forest but could not find his way. Encountering Echo, who was quite taken by him as he was good looking intelligent and spoke very clearly. When Narcissus asked for directions all he got in response from Echo were the words he spoke to her. Echo seeing that this was making him mad she tried to show love by reaching out to him and using non verbal ways to show her admiration. Narcissus was so taken with himself he rejected her and was mean and hurled insults and accusations at Echo. Narcissus determined to get out of the wood finally sat down resting near a clear little stream and when he gazed into it saw the reflection of himself. So taken with what he saw he declared his love for that reflection. He vowed to stay until it came out of the water so he could give it all his affection. Narcissus never found that love he yearned for except only in himself and he never acknowledged that. How sad. Are there stories like this in SFF where someone is so taken with their own self that they don't see anyone else? Do you know of an SFF Narcissus? One that is so taken with his own intelligence/looks that he cannot admit to himself that there are other thoughts and opinions? I am fortunate as I have found my love. Others have not and thats a shame......Humility those without it like Narcissus misses all the important things in life.

Some believe in destiny, some believe in fate. I believe that happiness is something we create

Interesting story 60...you may be speaking about one person in particular, but in my opinion, there are a few others...

Life...ya gotta love it!

Hi 60Min. I read this story when I was at school. Too bad it still holds true to this day. I found it a very sad story then, and I do now

Hi 60min. Im not going into any SFF members here but I do know that people who think only of themselves, totally self centred people, and believe it or not they dont even realize they are like that, well, they get nothing from life. Its take, take take. I know a female like that and she is just unlovable.A self centred person is a pain in the ass.

Hyperintelligent people often have trouble forming successful relationships.

Some are inflicted with a bona fide narcissistic personality disorder - others are just jerks.

An abundance of money and/or intelligence can also become a tool for control.

Nope, Carly Simon.

It has been a long-standing pop culture rumour that she penned it as a "get back" song after being dumped by Warren Beatty. Simon has never confirmed, nor denied this. However, Beatty assumed it was about him, and thanked her for it! How vain is that??

Whatever the case, it's a great song.

On second thought 60min, I apologize for my choice of words, here in my comment........rather unthinking of me, as it seems to have brought out a bit of nastiness in a few other commenters........you are a wise and understanding man and truly "one of a kind".....unfortunate there are always those who feel the need to twist meaning to suit themselves!......I promise to be more careful next time.

I, for one , got your meaning clearly , exactly as you intended , but then in SFF I have become an expert in reading snide re marks and innuendos .
