Seems to me that the first step is to focus all possible resources in the country on figuring out why the US has this constant stream of mass shootings.......Every time someone comes up with a possibility to ameliorate the situation, you instantly slam it against the wall.......Makes us wonder if the Right wants a solution....or even an amelioration.

Taking some of the power away from the NRA would probably help....Why in the world is the NRA allowed to bribe politicians and government bureaucrats ?Why are they handed all that power?.....Seems like that's just asking for it.........If I hear one more Right-Wing American say the phrase "Thoughts and Prayers" as a response to another mass murder, I will know for sure that they have no desire to stop the slaughter.

I'm not for gun control but I am for people control.

A couple short years the Republican response, along with the NRA response to mass shootings was a mental health approach to background checks ... which I believe should be heavily focused on social media .. imagine that.

No bills showed up regarding mental health for the President to look at. Big surprise. Clearly the Republican Congress had no intention of funding anything like that. As usual all talk. The Obama Administration response was bring it; put up or shut up. Republicans decided to shut up.

So your best recommendation is to move labels around? Call it a "Mental Health issue" or a "Terrorism issue"? How will that help?.......Train and arm more people? Make armed guards a normal in schools? Who will pay for well-trained armed guards in all the schools, when the present government is pulling funds out of public education? What education programs would you defund in order to pay for the guards? Do you ever wonder how being surrounded by armed guards all day, every day may affect the mental health of children, and may contribute to future school shootings?......You know, because of "Mental Health" and "Terrorism" ..............

So an exact labelling of a gun is what's important? .....I can see now how the Trivia creeps into every conversation you have.....I thought they were little lessons, but it turns out you are playing a game of competitive surface information.....You load your weapon with your pre-packaged word-ammunition.....rat-a-tat-a-tatt.....My weapon shoots more words per minute than yours......I am Victorious in this game of trivial information......

After reading Maisie's comments on this page, It becomes clear that these mass murders are indeed caused by Mental Health issues........

Maisie's word of the moment seems to be "straw man"... any opinion that disagrees with her is a straw man!
She has to know that we all realise guns can't shoot by themselves. So why does she keep repeating that same silly "argument"?
Why does she want to add to America's mental health problems by placing even more guns and adding even more burden on the already underfunded education system?
Could it be that her focus is on her right to own a gun rather than people's rights to live a normal life span? Or is it just because she likes to put the cat among the pigeons?

As far as I'm concerned it doesn't matter one way or another why...the massive loss of human life especially young human life is a vital cause for giving up some privileges or "rights" , even if they are in the Constitution. Why else would there even be a Constitution?
Simplified?...yes, of course it is, but that's it in my little "self-righteous" nutshell.

Humans came first...and human life comes first.

" If I have a right to protect myself , then someone else is going to die. What doesn't make headlines is the shooting that was stopped by a law abiding person with a gun- like the Nashville church shooting, or the chicken plant shooting a few years ago. How much difference would an armed teacher have made here?"
You think that's not disingenuous?

I once knew a woman who believed all sane people should be locked up...and all the looneys be allowed to roam free. You sound just like her. You sound as if you believe the children should be armed. How great an idea would that be when we consider that school massacres are usually committed by pupils or ex-pupils with grudges? Great thinking...we discourage our kids from everything we think can harm them...then give them guns to kil[ /Il each other every time their feelings are hurt!!!

]As for Chicago...it's ALWAYS been like that, we've all read the history no matter how illiterate you think we are. Yesterday was the 89TH anniversary of the St. Valentine's Massacre. Nothing has changed since then. So stop laying blame... if the politicians won't sort it out the responsibility lies with the people to make sure they do...even if it means kicking out the government who refuses to protect them.

That's right...send the kids to the bookshelves and line them up that should make it easier for the gunman! Throwing books at a gun...yeah right...and they say it's daft to take a knife to a gunfight!

You cannot fight a deadly pattern unless you identify it"......That's exactly what I suggested in my first comment.....Focus all resources available on identifying the pattern....... You must be aware that every other nation also has people with "Mental Issues".......Most people with mental issues are not violent or evil or illogical...

Does the US have more people per capita with mental issues? What would fall under that label? Which mental issues contribute to someone becoming a "shooter'? Most people have some mental issues.....very few are without any..........The truth is, Maisie, that every country has people with mental issues,
probably at a similar rate as the US. The question is why those with mental issues in the USA are so much more likely to express their mental issues by shooting into crowds of people with an AR-15...or an another fire-arm.

You think the solution is to bring up children to expect this kind of violence and trauma.....train them up to expect it?......What kind of effect do you think that will have on their mental health?......Will it breed more shooters? How will normalizing violence affect them long-term?.

First you have to be honest with yourself and admit that it is a uniquely US situation......and then honestly investigate the contributing factors....Perhaps bring in experienced, knowledgeable people from other countries who have had success in ameliorating similar trends.

Remember back when Ted Cruz was campaigning for the presidency? His campaign was getting a lot of funding from the NRA. He did a lot of rallies and speeches at gun shows and NRA venues....he was their darling for a while.......Remember that? He was making a speech in a room with pictures and posters of guns all over the walls One of the many news photographers went home after the rally, scrolled through his photos and saw something that he hadn't noticed when he was snapping away at the event. When he focused in on Cruz's face, a photo of a gun that was on the wall behind him looked like it was aimed right at Cruz's head. He posted it and it was picked up by several news organizations as an ironic twist.......I remember you posting a blog about it.....You were so outraged....steamed up about it. You insisted that the photographer as well as the venues that posted it were evil and it was a form of violence and was just as bad as if they had actually threatened Cruz with shooting him in the head......You weren't alone......Fox was leading the outrage-machine.....they were apoplectic............I tried to get you to see it ironically......Looks like you still can't see how the NRA and the gun lobby has manipulated Republicans into this pro-gun fervour that is a form of Terrorism. Every 3 months, as many Americans are killed by guns as died on 9/11.
