I've made my own solar power wall (just for a hobby), power goes off I'm not really affected. I like it when I get the message "Your power will be on in a couple of hours" and everything is running. Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

Windy cold and they even shut down the interstate so many wrecks and drifts. Currently -3 F ... -19 C I threw a bucket of dirty water out and it froze in no time. Broke the ice three times today for the horses so they could get some water. The chickens water dish froze and cracked so I found a huge metal dog dish and filled it with water. Poor things were so thirsty.

Sounds like a really horrible and very cold day for you, Niles, so awful to lose power like that. Hope everything is back to normal by now. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

It's not a matter of it being cold......It's a matter of "grid lock"

I REMEMBER TIMES LIKE THAT WHEN I LIVED IN THE CHICAGO SUBURBS. TEMPERATURES WENT DOWN TO 20 BELOW AND WE HAD BLIZZARDS ALMOST EVERY WINTER. I HATE TO SAY IT IS AROUND 60°C HERE TODAY. HAPPY HOLIDAYS ANYHOW.

I believe such an outage is not a regular feature where you live. Season's Greetings, Nile

A lot of outages here in NC. But we r ok ! Went down to 7 degrees here last night. Is 25 right now. Yesterday morning (almost afternoon) I went to get my brakes fixed. So go out to the car and my door is frozen. Get it opened and went to the gas station. Went to put just a little bit of gas in the car. I tried to stop it and it froze on, needless to say I now have a full tank of gas BUT... gas is all over the ground and me and my son. Luckily enough, the fire dept. was on the other side of the pumps to help out. Besides smelling like gas, I was freezing. Ok get to go now and go to the bank ATM my freakin window was frozen shut. Get that working and head to get brakes. He takes the wheels off and asks me where r the brake pads....the day before he didn't say i needed to bring brake pads. So went home, we took showers and changed clothes. The shower was the best part of my day ! LOL

I knew this arctic front was heading in your direction, we didn't get any snow, or ice though, I saw a few big snow flakes, but that was it. What a day you had!! I don't understand why you were supposed to bring the brake pads though? When I take my truck in to get fixed I don't have to bring parts for any repairs. That's why I take it to get fixed, if I buy parts, then I do the repairs. Weird repair shop, LOL.

I was looking into solar panels a few years back. You'll have to share the do it yourself plans on how to make one and set it up. That would make a great blog! There are plenty of how to do solar clips on U Toob. Jehu Garcia is very good, HB Powerwall also, there are many others. The main problem is getting good batteries, they can be very expensive. I have over 5k 18650 batteries in my system (about 35kw) with another 2k being processed. Also some 21700 batteries (about 8.4kw) which I will solder into packs and connect in the next month or two. I have been very fortunate to have an almost endless supply of batteries from a friend who goes to recyclers who are supportive of our projects. The packs have to be dismantled, the nickel strip taken off each battery, the bits of broken welded metal ground off the ends, then they get calibrated 3 times using an 'Opus' (google it) then number each battery, put the figures calibrated on a spreadsheet with the voltage of each battery logged and wait 3-12 months to see the voltage drop. If the voltage drop is acceptable they go into the next build. If not the recyclers get them back or if they are ok for lesser projects they can go into making torches or small battery packs for portable car fridges. But I dont need many of them for small projects anymore. It's taken me around 3 years to get this far. My system is not connected in any way to the grid, it's internal. It's cost me around $7K in bits, I save around $250.00 + per quarter. It's a hobby but with benefits. To start you have to figure out what system you want, like lead acid, deep cycle or lithium etc. Then you need to know if you want a 12v, 24v, or 48v system. Mine is 24v. It runs my fridge, freezer, microwave, electric fry pan, coffee maker, washing machine, computer, sound system and a few lights. I also have a small 12v system using my old car batteries, some motorcycle batteries and an old camping battery that charges my phone and does a few lights also. I dont know if this helps or has confused you more. Hope you can figure out something though. God bless. Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.
