I agree that unions are no longer the savior of the workers that they were in the beginning.

Working in the trades, one is way better off in a union most cases.
In the Carpenter's myself since 1973, lots of different employers, different jobs. One accounting office.
Union political leanings not mine though

    Quoting  :

That is despicable!
When my husband passed away in '95, my oldest son (non union) and my brother in law (strong union) both suggested I contact the local union at the factory where he had worked for several years. It had already closed down and reopened under foreign ownership, and the union was NOT a part of it any longer because the foreign ownership wanted no part of a union there. I could not see what good it would do because I never heard of any pension plan.
I finally called the union local headquarters and got yelled at by one of the leaders there. It seems that both my son and my brother in law had already called him and he told me in no uncertain terms that there was no pension!
A few weeks later, I received a letter from the Social Security Administration, informing me that the union and factory where he worked HAD contributed to a pension plan for a few years before it closed, and that I might be entitled to something. They gave me the address and number of the pension's administration.
I contacted them, and strangely I was entitled, and after some paperwork, I started getting a very small pension every month until I die. Hey, it's something and it pays the internet bill!
But NO thanks to the union office. I wanted to call that guy back and tell him an earful, but it just wasn't worth the effort........ and I wasn't a crotchety old gal back then. Today, I probably would do it.
