EAGLE EATING DUCK

Walked on the beach this afternoon. The mountains on the mainland, the Pacific Coast Range were showing their snowy faces and this Eagle was eating a dead duck......I got some good video footage of it, but the photos aren't great.....but here's one with his head up.....he was pretty nervous so close to the path, so he kept looking up from his meal.......

You do live in a beautiful area! It has only been in recent years that we have seen eagles in our area. Years ago, my husband and I thought we saw one flying, but were not absolutely certain. You know, when you see something and you are almost sure that is what it was, but since it isn't a normal sighting, you doubt yourself?
Now, they aren't common sightings, but do happen occasionally, and my daughter who is an eagle nut, knows the location of a couple of nests and enjoys watching them through her binoculars from a distance.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way about the Sasquatch....

Glad you enjoyed them.......I really need to buy a new camera, but when I go shopping for one, or research them on-line I feel overwhelmed by all the information.

Nice place and beautiful pictures of the sunset.
You were fortunate in taking a photo of an eagle eating.
Great photos, thanks for sharing.

Thanks.......I was about 15 ft. from the eagle. My son and grandsons were with me and they said that they had been down there earlier, they had seen the dead duck pinned under a log. I wondered why the eagle hadn't moved the duck further down the beach......eagles are carrion-eaters and can easily carry dead fish, seagulls, ducks etc up to their nests in tall trees. Earlier, I had seen an eagle in a tall snag that overlooks that section of the beach. I have had eagles steal my own salmon that I had caught and placed on a gravel bank for a few minutes.....A dead octopus, sea-lion, fish, etc. on the beach often attract many eagles at once and bicker over it.

Once an eagle grasps something in it's talons and flies off, they can't un-clench their talons unless they have a solid surface to push against. I have seen this phenomena during the salmon spawn, The salmon swim around in the shallows at the mouth of small rivers and creeks, waiting for the tide to come in to give them enough water to go up-river to their spawning beds. Even on the smallest rivers, the tide will go 3-5 miles up the river. In big rivers, like the Skeena, the tide goes 60 miles up the river. Anyways, the eagles spot the exposed backs of the salmon and attack....digging their talons deep into the flesh and carry them off. Sometimes the eagle miscalculates and attacks a salmon that is too heavy. I have seen this myself.....The eagle beats and beats it's wings, fighting the current, but, unable to let go, eventually gets dragged under the water and disappears from sight. I have also seen them come very close to drowning, and when they manage to lift the salmon, they will fly the shortest distance to the bank and take a breather......before they again take off.

I have lived in various places on this coast for 60 years, and been on boats as much as I could. I homesteaded on outer islands with no electricity or telephone for over 20 years........Washing diapers by hand and growing huge vegetable gardens and orchards, building our own home and wooden boats......and meanwhile, watching nature unfold. My grandchildren learn the Salmon Cycle in elementary school and go on class trips to the hatchery and to the spawning stream. I live in a community that is mostly funded by a Wilderness Adventure industry, backyard farming and co operation........I'm not sure why I'm on this site, as very few people here see any worth in Nature and so many don't even believe that Humans are part of Nature.......that without Nature, we won't last long. Their focus and trust is in a fairy tale after life and the Earth is but a way station..........They say that I believe in nothing and that morality is impossible without the fairy-tale.......What could we possibly have in common?

Humans elaborate and complicate, build castles in the sky.....but what it all comes down to, is that our life is completely dependent on a foot or so of topsoil and the fact it rains.

Sparkle,
Amazing! The photos are feast for the eyes! You have watched Nature unfolds its beauties slowly before your two eyes when you were busy building your home and wooden boats and much more during the 60 years you lived there. Did it not occur to you at least for once to record the amazing sightings by writing them down for posterity? If the answer is in affirmative, may I then request you to share them in a book form with us who consider themselves as part of Nature like you do?

I would like to write a book.....I have begun several, but I'm much too unorganized to complete the task.
