THROWBACK THURSDAY

This was about 20 years ago. I had taken the ferry North to Prince Rupert to visit family and friends for the weekend. I spent a lovely Saturday with my older sister and her family and spent the night there. I had an early morning date with an old friend to go sailing....He really wanted show me his new boat. We started off mid-morning and sailed across the harbour to visit a friend over there......I had promised my brother and his wife and kids that I would be there for dinner......I knew that they would make a lot of fuss and cook a very special meal for me......My friend and I had an exciting sail across the harbour to our friend's place and went swimming at the lagoon.....My friend was very reluctant to leave .....I finally got him back in the boat.....We cast off, ready for an exciting, close-hauled sail back to Rupert, but when we came around the point, the wind had completely died down..........

He wouldn't give up though, and start the engine....he was determined to sail even as the sail hung on the mast like a limp rag........The current was against us and and we were tacking back and forth trying desperately to catch some wind..........I begged him to start the engine, but he was determined to sail.......I was getting very agitated, knowing my brother and his wife's reaction to me being late for their sea-food cocktail entre and BBQ steaks done exactly right..........My friend finally agreed to start the engine and I heaved a great sigh of relief as we headed for town.

My brother's place was close to the water on thee outskirts of the city, so I asked the skipper to drop me off on a wharf in that area so I could make it on time.......and that's what he did.......He was very grumpy at this point and .as oon as I had leapt onto the dock, he had turned the boat and was off......As soon as I got my footing, I saw the sign saying it was a private dock and the gate that accessed the shore was locked......I yelled at my friend to get his attention, but he didn't hear, or didn't want to......

I spent the night on that dock.....I didn't sleep much......I was cold and miserable.....I showed up at my brother's early in the morning and he and his wife were very angry at me........had no sympathy.....My prawn cocktail still in it's fancy crystal stemmed dish in the fridge......He made a point of showing it to me.......My sailor friend ....well, I didn't see him for years, until he showed up on this island in his latest sail-boat after hi wife died. He told me he had deliberately dropped me off on a closed dock to punish me for not loving him back the way he wanted me to.......He found himself a new wife shortly thereafter and got into motorcycles......

Oh wow Sparkle that is quite a saga you had. What a silly bugger to let you off at a closed dock just because you wanted to go to your brother's place. I loved your photo. I have never been to Prince Rupert. I have always wanted to go to Powell River. You have to take a couple of ferries to get over there. Oh well maybe one day I will go.

A nice adventure that could have had a happy end if you would have been on time for dinner... Thanks for sharing.

I haven't been to Powell River since the Pulp Mill shut down.....I'm sure that's a big improvement......I spent a lot of time on the Sunshine Coast......I have to take 3 ferries to get there now, but we used to sail there......Crossing that channel is always an adventure.
