Eat Bugs and Live in a Pod: South African Entrepreneur Says Caterpillars Are “A Healthier Option” Than Steak in Latest Push to Convince People to Eat Bugs

A South African entrepreneur is innovating new ways of turning ‘mopane worms’ into a flour to be used for protein bars and protein smoothies.

Wendy Vesela, the chemical engineer behind the push for people to eat the caterpillars, said the bugs can also be used as pizza toppings.

A start-up entrepreneur from South Africa wants to change the way edible caterpillars popularly known as “mopane worms” are viewed and eaten.
South African chemical engineer Wendy Vesela has found ways of turning the spiky green and black caterpillars — which are packed with protein and iron — into a flour that can be used in savoury biscuits, sweet chocolate protein bars, cereals or smoothies.
The caterpillars are “a healthier option of protein”, she said. And it’s “not a worm. So people have just to get over that fear.”
Vesela tried to woo reluctant customers with biscuits and protein bars at a recent food fair in Johannesburg’s upmarket Sandton district.
I won’t eat a worm. I’m sorry, it’s disgusting. But if you give it to me in the form of a chocolate… it’s really delicious,” said Gail Odendaal, 38, walking away with a bag of protein bars.
Mopanes are environmentally friendly, too, requiring no extra water or land, as they breed and feed on mopane trees, which grow in hot and dry regions of southern Africa.
They are a better source of protein than many other foods on the market, said dietitian, Mpho Tshukudu.
“It’s high in protein, in essential fats and minerals, especially iron. It has more iron than the most expensive piece of steak,” she said.
Last year the World Economic Forum promoted the EU’s new plan to use mealworms in food in their bid to reduce meat consumption.
The globalists are pushing for the peasants to eat bugs, weeds and synthetic ‘meat’ because bugs “consume fewer resources than traditional livestock.”
“Livestock around the world is responsible for around 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions relating to human activity. The need for land – whether for grazing animals or growing crops to feed animals – is “the single greatest driver of deforestation, with major consequences for biodiversity loss,” the paper says.
The European Union will be using mealworms, eaten whole, or in powder form in food.
“The European Union (EU) has ruled that the larval stage of the Tenebrio molitor beetle, the mealworm, is safe for people to eat and it will shortly be on the market as a “novel food”” the WEF said.

The Biden White House admitted on Thursday that record-high gas prices are part of a broader scheme to usher in the “liberal world order” at Americans’ expense.
On CNN, Biden’s director of the National Economic Council, Brian Deese, made clear that high gas prices are a part of the plan, as the administration promotes prohibitively expensive electric vehicles to struggling consumers.
“What do you say to those families who say, ‘Listen, we can’t afford to pay $4.85 a gallon for months if not years. It’s just not sustainable’?” the CNN host asked.
“What you heard from the president today was a clear articulation of the stakes,” Deese said. “This is about the future of the liberal world order and we have to stand firm
Deese was referring to Joe Biden’s comments at the NATO summit in Madrid, after one reporter asked the president, “How long is it fair to expect American drivers and drivers around the world to pay that premium for this war?” in reference to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which only spiked prices that were already elevated long before the war started.
“As long as it takes,” Biden said.
Deese then highlighted the administration’s efforts to “blunt” rising gas prices, including proposals for global price caps on Russian oil and a temporary gas tax holiday. Such policy maneuvers, however, are unlikely to make a difference without more oil and gas production in the United States, operations the White House has continued to shut down.
In May, Biden’s Department of the Interior killed plans for major oil and gas projects across the country from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico. When the administration announced the resumption of new oil and gas leases on federal lands to comply with a court order, the White House did so with a 50 percent spike in royalties while offering only 20 percent of the land initially nominated for exploration.
Other administration officials have left no room for doubt about their intentions, which has choked investment in the capital- and labor-intensive industry.
“President Biden remains absolutely committed to not moving forward with additional drilling on public lands,” White House climate adviser Gina McCarthy pledged on MSNBC.
Meanwhile, the president’s proposed break on federal gas taxes is a gimmick that will only offer more revenues for corporate sellers, who are able to pocket the savings as gas prices remain dictated by the open market and driven higher by the government-induced scarcity.
Deese also said the White House was “engaged with the industry” to increase oil and gas supplies and bring refinery capacity back online. But as the administration shutters down oil and gas operations, Biden also shut down plans for a major refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands two months ago. Five refineries have closed down operations since 2020, with few prospects of reopening under an administration that has followed through on its pledge to regulate the industry out of business.

Now there’s more. During her testimony, Hutchinson claimed to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) that she wrote a note for former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows regarding a statement for President Donald Trump to make about the unfolding riot. She told the Committee, that it was her handwriting.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Hutchinson, testifying about the note, said, “That’s a note that I wrote at the direction of the chief of staff on Jan. 6, likely around 3 o’clock.”
“And it’s written on the chief of staff note card, but that’s your handwriting, Ms. Hutchinson?” Rep. Cheney asked.
“That’s my handwriting,” Hutchinson replied.
Hutchinson, a former top aide to Meadows, said that Meadows handed her the note card and a pen and started dictating a potential statement for Trump to release amid the Capitol riot.
Except former Trump White House lawyer Eric Herschmann is now saying that he wrote the note. Indeed, he previously testified to the Committee that he wrote it.
“The handwritten note that Cassidy Hutchinson testified was written by her was in fact written by Eric Herschmann on January 6, 2021,” a spokesperson for Herschmann told ABC News Tuesday evening.
“All sources with direct knowledge and law enforcement have and will confirm that it was written by Mr. Herschmann,” the spokesperson said.
